Work and Primary Objectives

The Association of Anaesthesiologists of Malta represents all the medical doctors practicing in the various fields of Anaesthesiology including Intensive Care Medicine and Chronic Pain Medicine. It is the national anaesthesiology society of Malta. The main objective of the AAM is to work with and for its members to ensure the high standards of the profession. It represents the needs and interests of its members and all anaesthesiologists practicing in Malta and safeguards their well being.

The AAM promotes and supports education and research in anaesthesia and medical specialities allied to anaesthesia. It participates in the Anaesthesiology Training Programme of Malta by supervising and finally accredits the training of locally trained anaesthetists. This leads to the inclusion on the Maltese Specialist Register as Specialist in Anaesthesiology and Intensice Care. The President of the AAM sits on the Specialist Accreditation Committee – the official independent body that awards the Certificate of Completion of Training (CST) and also makes recommendations to the Malta Medical Council for the inclusion of Specialists to the relevant Specialist Register.

The AAM encourages and supports worldwide co-operation between anaesthetists by participating in National and International organisations relevant to the speciality. It represents Malta and its resident Anaesthesiologists at European bodies and organizations e.g. UEMS, ESA. The association is also a participant in the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists.
